Slovenly Peter is
based on the classic picture-book of the same name, written and illustrated in 1845 by
Heinrich Hoffmann as an admonitory and amusing Christmas gift to
his children. Our views on upbringing have changed radically today, so the message
has taken a new turn, but still - or perhaps because
of this, the value of the Peter stories is greater than ever. Not least the entertainment
value.
We follow Peter,
a messy and wild boy with unruly, uncombable hair and nails which have never seen a
clipper. When he wants to be integrated into the ranks of the goody-goods,
these "proper" children lead him - and the audience - through Bastian's giant picture book,
a journey which takes on the character of a set of grueling
trials which are not weathered lightly.
