In 1996, Theatret
Thalias Tjenere produced The Well of the Saints, their first performance with masks.
The piece was a fable about blindness and vision, beauty and ugliness. So it
was quite atraightforward to choose a style of preformance which in its essence was visual.
J.M.Synge's "ugly old beggars" were realised as mask characters, which
drew a profound and immediate response from the audiences. It was to a large extent this reaction
which inspired the company to continue exploring the medium.
In their quest to
develop a modern Danish mask theatre, they have encountered and experimented with many diverse and widely
divergent mask genres from different cultures, and today Theatret Thalias Tjenere is Denmarks
leading mask company.
The masks for most productions are created by Stephan Vernier,
but all of the company's performers are able maskmakers.
